About Me

My name is Tim Draper and I am the founder of Retro Replica Model Kits. I live in the UK and have been a classic scooter enthusiast since the early 1980s. I am a mechanical engineer, IT consultant and 3D modelling expert.

My career in design and 3D CAD has extended into my own interests and hobbies. For over 15 years, I have been interested in 3D modelling, CGI and 3D printing.

The Retro Replica Story

In 2016, I decided to combine my interest in scooters with my passion for 3D modelling... and so this story began!

Back in 2016, my aim was to create a computer generated 3D model of a series 3 Lambretta and produce photo-realistic rendered images that were so life-like, a real scooterist would be fooled that it was the real thing. The project gained a loyal following on social media, and when I first started experimenting with 3D printing in 2018, I started to get requests to print and sell a scale model kit. But unfortunately, the technology was just not realistic for mass production of commercial grade kits.

The project moved on and then 2023, 3D printing technology, capable of mass production was finally a viable option. That is where Retro Replica Model Kits was born.

Over the next 8 months, hundreds of hours were spent modelling our first kit, the Lambretta GP200, in 3D CAD. Very early on we decided to model all of the internal engine components, normally hidden under the side panels, thus allowing modellers to display the scooter with the side panels removed. The design was then subjected to extensive 3D print trials to perfect a model kit of the highest standard of accuracy and finish. In December 2024, the Lambretta GP200 model kit finally went on sale.

Our aim with the model kit was to replicate the vibrant custom and performance modifications culture that was so prevalent in the scooter sub-culture. So following on from the launch of the Lambretta GP200 base kit, we developed an accessory and tuning range. This opened up a whole multitude of opportunities for owners of the kit to personalise their build. Many owners chose to recreate a real scooter in the garage or from their past.
